Wraps. Zustand: very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. 28 cm, 142 [2] pages. Wraps. Illustrations. Map. Figures. Footnotes. Chronology. Appendices. DOE/HR-0098. Cover has minor wear and soiling. The Department of Energy Organization Act of 1977 created perhaps the most diverse agency in the Federal Government. The new department brought together not only most of the government`s energy programs but also defense responsibilities that included the design, construction, and testing of nuclear weapons. The Department of Energy incorporated a score of organizational entities from a dozen departments and agencies. The Department of Energy sought--and continues to seek--to be one of the Nation`s premier science and technology organizations. The Department of Energy, 1977--1994, is a summary history of the origins, goals, and achievements of the Department and selected major programs. The study details how the Department was born of the energy crisis of the early and mid-1970s. With the end of the Cold War, the Department of Energy further transformed itself, moving to partial dismantlement of the nuclear weapons complex and to an increased emphasis on technology transfer efforts. The United States Department of Energy (DOE) is a Cabinet-level department of the United States Government concerned with the United States' policies regarding energy and safety in handling nuclear material. Its responsibilities include the nation's nuclear weapons program, nuclear reactor production for the United States Navy, energy-related research, radioactive waste disposal, and domestic energy production. DOE sponsors more research in the physical sciences than any other U.S. federal agency, the majority of which is conducted through its system of National Laboratories. The 1973 oil crisis called attention to the need to consolidate energy policy. On August 4, 1977, President Jimmy Carter signed into law The Department of Energy Organization Act of 1977 (Pub. L. 95-91, 91 Stat. 565, enacted August 4, 1977), which created the Department of Energy. The new agency, which began operations on October 1, 1977, consolidated the Federal Energy Administration, the Energy Research and Development Administration, the Federal Power Commission, and programs of various other agencies.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very good. First Printing [Stated]. xxii, [2], 644, [4] pages. Foreword by Alan Schriesheim. Illustrations. Appendices. Notes. Index. Minor flaw on half-title page (bandiage trimmed and small chip and crease). Offers an overview of the history, function, mission, and politics surrounding the center responsible for the development of nuclear reactors. Jack M. Holl has served as a professor of history at Williams College, the University of Washington, and Kansas State University. A public historian at the US Atomic Energy Commission and the Department of Energy, he played a leading role in the founding of the Society for History in the Federal Government and launching the National Council of Public History. Richard Greening Hewlett (February 12, 1923 September 1, 2015) was an American public historian best known for his work as the Chief Historian of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. Hewlett is today recognized as one of the most influential federal historians in the United States and was a founding member of both the Society for History in the Federal Government and the National Council on Public History. Ruth R. Harris was the Director of Research and a senior historian with History Associates, Inc. Alan Schriesheim is the Director Emeritus of Argonne National Laboratory, one of the U.S. Department of Energy's largest research centers. Schriesheim is an internationally acclaimed chemist and technology executive. In a career spanning 50 years in industry, academia, and government, Schriesheim was a pioneer in transforming large and highly complex research organizations to yield productive commercialized technology. Charts the history of a representative national laboratory, an institutional form of great importance and interest for late twentieth-century America, taking that history from World War II through the entire Cold War period and to the last decade of the Twentieth Century. Argonne National Laboratory is a federally funded research and development center in Lemont, Illinois, United States. Founded in 1946, the laboratory is owned by the United States Department of Energy and administered by UChicago Argonne LLC of the University of Chicago. The facility is the largest national laboratory in the Midwest. Argonne had its beginnings in the Metallurgical Laboratory of the University of Chicago, formed in part to carry out Enrico Fermi's work on nuclear reactors for the Manhattan Project during World War II. After the war, it was designated as the first national laboratory in the United States on July 1, 1946. In its first decades, the laboratory was a hub for peaceful use of nuclear physics; nearly all operating commercial nuclear power plants around the world have roots in Argonne research. More than 1,000 scientists conduct research at the laboratory, in the fields of energy storage and renewable energy; fundamental research in physics, chemistry, and materials science; environmental sustainability; supercomputing; and national security.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Second Printing [stated]. xxix, [1], 696, [4] pages. Illustrations. Figures and Tables. Appendix 1 through Appendix 9. List of Abbreviations. Notes. Essay on Sources by Roger M. Anders. Index. Cover has slight wear and soiling. With a Foreword by Richard S. Kirkendall. This is one of the California studies in the history of science. This is the third volume of the official history of the Atomic Energy Commission. This work taps the writings of Eisenhower that had recently become available and thus adds to our understanding of his presidency. This book is not a narrow history of a government agency. Dealing with the AEC during the period when issued concerning nuclear weapons and nuclear power emerged as large public concerns, this volume ranges well beyond the Commission. Much of the work deals with Eisenhower. The authors offer support for the understanding of Eisenhower as a strong, active president, determined to supply leadership. This work illustrates other sides of the Eisenhower presidency. Compared with some other people of importance, Eisenhower was less fearful and more willing to compromise, but he did have a quite negative view of the Soviet Union and its intentions. The authors call attention to Eisenhower's Atoms for Peace program and a need to reduce dependence on imported oil.
