"Diable-A Dog" was renamed Bâtard (mongrel in English) upon later publication in 1904. It follows themes of wild versus domesticated natures in dogs, similarly seen in London's novel The Call of the Wild. At the time of its inception in 1886, Cosmopolitan Magazine aimed to offer women articles on life in the home, but began publishing new fiction works in the early 1900s. Notable contributors included Jack London, as seen in this volume, as well as Upton Sinclair, Sinclair Lewis, and Kurt Vonnegut. Short stories would be published in their entireties, and longer pieces would be expanded across multiple issues to keep readers interested in upcoming publications.

McClure's Magazine, founded in 1893, began with investigative journalism looking to expose the injustices in the U.S. government and large corporations. The initial group of journalists working for the magazine left in 1906 to begin The American Magazine. McClure's continued operations by focusing on literary works, publishing pieces by authors like Jack London and Rudyard Kipling, as well as art pieces by N.C. Wyeth, among others.

Complete with 34 illustrations, including a frontispiece. A scarce copy. Martin Johnson (1884-1937) sailed with Jack London from 1907-1909 aboard the Snark to explore around the world. While touring the United States to showcase the memorabilia from his voyage, he met his future wife Osa Leighty (Johnson). The two traveled together on safaris and big game hunting expeditions, filming television shows and documentaries that were later used in notable locations like Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge.
