This two-volume work presents the remarkable travels and observations of Dominican missionary Domingo Navarrete, who journeyed through Mexico, the Philippines, Macao, China, India and Macassar during the seventeenth century. Much of the account concerns his years in China, describing Chinese society, religion and missionary activity. Navarrete was an outspoken opponent of Jesuit methods, and his writings provide an important contemporary account of the Chinese Rites controversy over how Christianity should accommodate Chinese customs and beliefs. The second volume also includes his account of Santo Domingo and additional material relating to his travels and missionary experiences.…
