El autor de este libro, Jörn Donner, es un polifacético creador finlandés. Ha escrito novela, ensayo, crítica literaria, libros de viaje, ha sido productor cinematográfico, director de cine, actor, director del Instituto del cine sueco y diputado en el parlamento finlandés y en el europeo. Nació en Helsinki en 1933 en el seno de una familia acomodada de la minoría suecoparlante del país. Su padre era un conocido lingüista, profesor en la Universidad de Helsinki y político. Ya de adolescente colaboraba en la publicación de su instituto. Fue redactor con el escritor Krister Kihlman de la revista de política y literatura Arena de 1951 al 54. En esa década colaboraba en el diario comunista Vapaa Sana. Terminó sus estudios universitarios de literatura en 1959 ya con prestigio como crítico cinematográfico y escritor y seis libros publicados tras su debut a los 18 años. Cofundador del Archivo de Cine finlandés en 1957. Objetor de conciencia hizo el servicio militar sustitutorio en un hospital, experiencia de la que dio testimonio en el libro En un hospital, 1960. En 1961 se traslada a Suecia donde trabaja como crítico cinematográfico del diario Dagens Nyheter y termina uno de los primeros libros sobre el cine de Ingmar Bergman Djävulens ansikte (El rostro del diablo), 1962, y en Suecia debuta como director de cine con la película Un domingo.
