Mitchell set out on his fourth and last expedition, undertaken in search of an overland route to Port Essington on the north-west coast, in December 1845. Nine months later, short of supplies and threatened by aborigines, he was forced to turn back near Isisford on the Barcoo River, incorrectly referred to as the 'Victoria', mistakenly believing that he had found his long-sought for north-west flowing river.
