Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: New. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: New. 1st Edition. Contents: Foreword. Preface. Introduction. I. Introduction and general discussion on S&T Diplomacy. II. Rationale for science and technology Diplomacy. III. Examples of successful international cooperation. Science Diplomacy is an aid to improving the international relation, facilitating international scientific cooperation and supporting foreign policy objectives to address common issues between the nations related to strategic growth, trade etc. Different countries have their own policies and they establish international cooperation in S&T through science diplomacy. Thus science as a diplomatic tool acts as an entry point to a headstrong society, and at the same time, breaks down politically focussed presumptions offering tangible benefits with a promising mode of growth. Science diplomacy also helps in fostering international collaborations among scientists in nations, where official diplomatic relations might be limited or strained, by providing a platform for scientists to engage in building capacity and networks, and evaluating progress and impact of challenges related to global climate change, energy security, sustainable agricultural production, biological security and many others issues. The present Publication is a follow up of the International Workshop on Science and Technology Diplomacy in Developing Countries organised at Tehran, Iran during 13-16 May 2012 by the NAM S&T Centre jointly with the Center for Innovation and Technology Cooperation of Iran (CITC). The book includes 19 research papers and status reports from 15 countries, presenting significant insights on role of science diplomacy in conducting negotiations between the nations and also the skills in handling the affairs without arousing hostility in developing countries. It is expected to be of great value for the researchers, professionals and policy makers who are engaged in Science Diplomacy as a tool for developing international partnerships and collaborations, which in turn breaks the barrier among the nations and make a world a beautiful place to live in.

We investigated coccolithophore fluxes from four sediment traps located in the northeastern Arabian Sea at the continental slope of Pakistan. Two moorings, WPT and EPT (Western/isastern PAKOMIN Trap), consisting of one and two sediment traps were deployed at water depths of about 500 m and 1500 m. They collected settling particles from October 1993 to February 1994 and from May 1995 to February 1996 at intervals of 22 and 24 days, respectively. A longer sampling was prevented probably due to high sedimentation events which occluded the trap cones. Both areas were characterised by a strong seasonality in coccolith fluxes. High fluxes were recorded with up to 2000 × 106 coccoliths m2 d1 in the early SW (summer) monsoon and up to 5400 × 106 coccoliths m2 d1 in the early NE (winter) monsoon. Generally, coccosphere fluxes exhibited a similar trend but were some orders of magnitude lower than coccolith fluxes. Twenty-seven taxa were identified in this study, all well to moderately well preserved and with a small range of diversity. The species composition was dominated by Gephyrocapsa oceanica, Florisphaera profunda, and Emiliania huxleyi making up about 70% of the assemblages. During the SW (summer) monsoon high productivity in the surface waters of the eastern Arabian Sea may be linked to the upwelling system off Oman. Apparently, nutrient-rich surface water derived from the southwestern upwelling areas off Oman with high standing stocks were carried into this area by northeast flowing currents. In contrast, during the NE (winter) monsoon the locally observed high coccolithophore production is hypothesised to respond to local injections of nutrient-rich deep water into the surface water due to sea-surface cooling leading to convection. Consequently, fluxes during the winter monsoon were in the same range as during the summer monsoon. 24 pp., 9 figs, gr. 8.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The ocean is a major source of income for many coastal nations, particularly in the developing world. Economic benefits from the ocean in the long-term depend on its wise science and technology-based management. The intersection of science, technology, and economy are most obvious in nations' coastal zones. This book highlights the need for the application of ocean science and technology for best economic outcomes. It gives examples of ocean resources and the threats to them from climate change and other human interventions, as well as provides information on the available ocean research and observation tools to monitor their impact as well as on the related internationally available opportunities for capacity development.
