Very good condition overall.; "Kura, storehouses like the ones shown in this book, are no longer built today. Indeed, at least one important early type, the log cabin, or azekura, has not been built for nearly a thousand years, and the only examples still standing are those at the Nikko shrines. Most farmers who still have wooden storehouses of any type would be happy to sell them, and the few people who still use plaster storehouses do so because they happen to have them. No one would consider building a new one, and if someone should take it upon himself to try, he would have a difficult time finding carpenters and plasterers able to do the work. Furthermore, a traditional plaster storehouse would doubtless cost far more today than one made of steel and concrete. In a sense this book is no more than a fond farewell to the fast-disappearing kura of the past, a nostalgic tribute of interest primarily to those who have lived with storehouses and loved them. Still, it is precisely when the creations of men are perishing that people begin to give serious consideration to their true value. If Japanese store- houses had no value other than the purely functional, they could simply be discarded. I think, however, that they have a beauty that transcends function, and it is for this reason that others and I are laboring to prevent them from passing into oblivion. We see the storehouse not merely as a utilitarian form of architecture but as something wrapped in history and fable, a vestige of a now-vanished way of life and the legacy of an ancient culture. By becoming acquainted with the Japanese storehouse of the past, the reader can better understand the solidarity and continuity of human life in the Japanese Archipelago. This book is the cooperative effort of three persons. Kiyoshi Takai had the task of portraying the Japanese storehouse and its environment in photographs, and to do so he covered the Japanese countryside with boundless energy. Shigenobu Nakayama was in charge of the architectural drawings, many of which are sectional diagrams in perspective that display not only his fine grasp of architecture but an exceptional ability as an illustrator. I myself wrote the text and determined the general composition, attempting as I did so to emphasize the historical and cultural significance of the traditional storehouse." excerpt from the preface by Teij Itoh, March 20, 1973.
