Unbound. Zustand: Near Fine. One leaf folded to make four closely written but legible pages. Sent by Isbell from Camp Talbot in Virginia to his sister in Stone Wall MIlls, Appomattax County, Virginia and dated September 15th, 1861. Old folds from mailing else near fine with the envelope present and also near fine. Isbell was a shoemaker who served with the Virginia Horse Artillery (Beauregard's Rifles) Interesting general content talking of acquaintances who were serving (and largely suffering, from one thing or another, including Isbell, ironically a shoemaker who notes): "I have been suffering some since yesterday with a toe that I knocked out of joint, my foot is swelled a good deal this morning but is getting better. I don't think that I have mentioned that we all do barefooted down here, some of us go barefooted all the time as there is no rocks and nothing but sand down here." He mentions: "Our Captain one day last week took us down on a point 2 1/2 miles of Fortress Monroe and 14 miles up the the [?] as Fort Calhoun. We were so close that we had to keep our battery concealed in the woods to keep them from firing on us. We could see the Yankees about the fort, see the big guns in the fort there was a good many war steamers and sail vessels lying around the fort." He later notes: "It was reported here last night that there has been a big fight in Western Virginia; it was reported that fifteen hundred Confederates were killed, sixty five hundred Federal. I don't know how true this may be." This might possibly been the Battle of Cheat Mountain in western Virginia, apparently the first battle of the war where Robert E. Lee commanded troops in the field, but with rather less vigorous results than Isbell was told about, with both sides losing a hundred or fewer killed. A nice, interesting, and legible letter.
