The signature 'Cavan' is between two horizontal lines. The rest of the document would appear to be in a secretarial hand, but the matter is not quite certai…n. It reads: '[.] | I have the Honor | to be | Sir | Your Royal Highness's | Most Obedt. Faithful | & Much Obliged | Humble Servt. | Cavan'. It is dated 'Cowes. | March 1st 1804' and addressed to 'His Royal Highness | The Duke of York'. Annotated n a contemporary hand at foot: 'General The Earl of Cavan'.

The item would appear to be entirely in the hand of the Earl, but the matter is not quite certain, and it may be in a secretarial hand, with only Cork's…signature in autograph. It reads: '[.] | Sir | Your Royal Highness's | very obedient | and very humble Servant | Cork | Col | [Som.?] Reg.] Addressed to 'His R. H. | The Duke of York | &c &c &c'. Annotated, in two separate contemporary hands: 'Novr. 1795' and 'Nov. 1795.'.

In den Warenkorb3pp, 16mo. On bifolium of laid paper, with armorial watermark. Forty-two lines of text, signed 'Downshire' and addressed 'To / The Princess Charlotte of Wales'. The first five lines are scored through, as is another passage on the first page. The deleted commencement reads: 'Madam. / I hasten to return Yr. R. H. my humble thanks… for the kind & gracious reply to my letter which [?] or receiving, in which Yr. R. H. confers upon Lady D. & myself in a manner so peculiarly [?] honour we have most anxiously desired.' The honour in question is 'consenting to be godmother to our little girl who shall be always brought up in every sentiment of respect & affection for her Royal Protector, whose name she will have the Honour of bearing.' The second half of the letter continues in much the same vein. The daughter, Lady Charlotte Augusta Hill (1815-1861), married Sir George Chetwynd.

His efforts on behalf of the recently-emancipated slaves (including the financing of two schools) caused him to become unpopular with the plantation owners, and he was effectively ousted in 1836. 2pp, 12mo. Twenty-one lines of text. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Folded… for postage. Small square of paper with engraving of the family crest laid down at the foot of the second page. Addressed to 'My Dear Sir' and signed 'Sligo'. The Marquis's handwriting is somewhat opaque. Begins: 'Mr [Bailey?] having taken on himself to say that you might give me the Sixty Guineas that I was offered for my box in the remainder of the Season from the 19th of June, or rather from after next Saturday [Evng?] I think that the best way to make matters all right will be to send you a check for Eighty Guineas'. He continues with reference to arrangements for the following year.

In den WarenkorbThe frank is on a piece of paper cut from the front of an envelope. In good condition, lightly aged, laid down on part of leaf from album. The frank is set out in the customary manner, with the signature 'Boyle' at bottom left, and the address reading: 'Woolverhampton [sic] July | seventeenth 1848 | Miss L: Inglis | Milton Bryan…d [sic] | Wooborn'. The recipient is probably Mary Louisa Inglis (d.1853), sister of Sir Robert Harry Inglis (1786-1855), Conservative politician and Lord of the Manor of Milton Bryant (or Bryan), Bedfordshire. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.

Signed 'Dunraven'. Begins: 'My dear Mr Harnwell / I have kept your very interesting drawings & plates a long time. The Bridge must be a very striking object.…The proofs of the ancient dwellings I fear I shd not have kept so long.' Dunraven is 'longing to see' Bradford and will 'get some copies of the photos'. It may be better to 'get it photd [sic] on a larger scale'. He ends in the hope that Harnwell 'will receive all back safe'.
