Net als Primo Levi is hij sindsdien op zoek naar het waarom van de holocaust. In Ik, de ander reist de Hongaar Kert?sz naar Berlijn, Tel Aviv, M?nchen, Hamburg en Amst…erdam, waarbij hij terugblikt op de verlossing van het communisme en op zijn rol van eeuwige buitenstaander. Imre Kert?sz (Boedapest, 1929) werd vanwege zijn joodse afkomst in 1944 gedeporteerd naar Auschwitz en vervolgens overgeplaatst naar Buchenwald, waaruit hij in 1945 bevrijd werd. Deze gebeurtenissen hebben een grote invloed gehad op zijn leven en werk. Na zijn terugkeer werd Kert?sz journalist en korte tijd lid van de communistische partij. In 1955 besluit hij schrijver te worden, maar publicatie van zijn werk blijkt in Hongarije onmogelijk te zijn. Hij houdt zich in leven met onder meer het schrijven van komedies en musicals en met het vertalen van Freud, Nietzsche en Wittgenstein. Als hij uiteindelijk met Onbepaald door het lot toch weet te debuteren, wordt het boek doodgezwegen. Pas na de val van het Hongaarse communistische regime in 1989 kan hij vrijuit schrijven en publiceren. Andere in het Nederlands vertaalde boeken van Kert?sz zijn Het fiasco en Kaddisj voor een niet geboren kind. Onlangs verschenen ook van zijn hand Dagboek van een galeislaaf en Liquidatie. In oktober 2002 werd Imre Kert?sz voor zijn oeuvre onderscheiden met de Nobelprijs voor Literatuur.; ExLibris preegstempel op titelpagina & iets scheef gelezen.
