Set in Cape Cod, with a middle aged sea captain, having a modest but sufficient fortune, gives up his seafaring life and returns to his home village. He buys an interest in a general store and is up to his neck in trouble. A young man calling himself a doctor of sick businesses pushes himself into the firm, with amusing incidents that follow. He appoints a young woman as postmaster for the village, but ends up taking the job himself and appointed the woman as his assistant. The story involves window screens, contracts and a love interest the blossoms in the midst of fierce competition between the young woman and man. ; illustrations by Howard Heath, (1879-1969) born in Boulder, Colorado He completed three years of high school at Fort Collins, Colorado. He attended Colorado Springs Art School, Denver Art School, Art Institute of Chicago, Art Students League in New York, and took private painting and sketch lessons. Heath worked for the Chicago Tribune and did a number of book illustrations. He was a member of the Silvermine Guild of Artists in New Canaan, Connecticut. He began his work for the WPA in November of 1935 and completed 192 easel paintings and two murals. He was the artist who illustrated L. Frank Baum's two "Sam Steele" books, ; Binding FINE /the very scarce Dustjacket is present but only rates POOR. Book.

This fairly uncommon book is written in an archly witty style with many actual drink recipes, often with sarcastic titles like "Why Not Now," "Elephants Sometimes Forget," "Too Good to be True,' and "Mrs. Solomon Wears Slacks." The recipes are interspersed with short texts and many of Irvin's stylized and amusing illustrations. Bound in red cloth with titling to the spine and a black and white sketch of a hand holding a martini glass, with "A Vous" written underneath. Cloth is soiled around the edges and with bumped corners and a torn top edge to the spine. Interior pages are generally clean and bright. Includes an index to subjects and drink names. Despite flaws to covers in very good condition. Measures 5.5 x 8 inches. 223 pages.
