A very early, and now hard to find, book for children written by Don Emblen and his first wife when they themselves were young (Emblen capped his long writing career by being named Sonoma County's first poet laureate.) . Joan Frank writing for ZYZZYVA commented that "The story broaches, with extreme gentleness, the problem of racism, or Otherness. The orphaned Juan, who lives with an American foster family, worries that he is the wrong color. Animal and human friends, of different colors, teach him otherwise." Illustrated by Lynd Ward. 189 pp. Illustrated endpaper. Very good in blue-green cloth with black lettering on the spine, small illustration on front cover (corners slightly bumped, but a tight, clean copy) , no dust jacket.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good dj. Illustrated by (dj) Lynd Ward (illustrator). First Edition. [generally tight and clean, but a bit of damage (fraying) to top rear corner; jacket well-worn at edges/corners, paper loss at top of spine, several tears at top of front panel with a 1/4" x 1" chunk just barely hanging on]. Novel about a diverse group of immigrants passing through Ellis Island, by an author who had been born in Latvia and had traveled extensively before coming to the U.S. in 1946 -- as the jacket blurb puts it, "a story of suspended lives by one who has known the tension of waiting on the threshold." Striking jacket illustration by Lynd Ward, of the Statue of Liberty seen through a barred window.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. Illustrated by Lynd Ward (illustrator). reprint. Color and b&w plates; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 46 pages; Circa [1963] William Morrow. Royal octavo HC/DJ. Though 1947 is the only date recorded on the copyright, I believe this copy likely to have been printed in the mid 1960's during the Civil Rights struggle. In the first consideration the book just does not feel like a 1947 printing. I note that the first edition was issued in black cloth with a pictorial panel tipped on the cover board. This copy is in yellow cloth with no pictorial panel. This copy comes from the collection of a 1950's- 1980's children's librarian, who chiefly sourced her collector books as extras purchased with her private funds in the library order. There is no Worldcat record of a 1960's reissue, likely because the title does not have any reference to being a reissue. My supposition is that there was a call for the book among school libraries during the Civil Rights era and the publisher accommodated the demand but without a trade edition. This particular copy is superb, tight, bright and fresh in a crisp edged and uniformly bright pictorial dust jacket. The jacket is not priced on the front flap. Illustrated throughout with color toned and b&w drawings from the art of Lynd Ward. A few superficial imperfections to the jacket but overall about as new. F/NF.
