In general, cross references have been avoided. Where conveinet, information is summarized under an appropriate heading and given in more detail under individual entries. It has been sought to make this dictionary readable as well as informative, and of value to both student of music and the general reader. The articles on important composers, for instance, besides giving such facts as the dates and places of their birth and death, indicate the circumstances of their lives, their contributions to music, and their influence on the course of musical development.
