Until the mid-19th century, religiously inspired Jewish leaders effected rescue to fulfil religious injunctions to redeem the captives, more recent efforts were taken by secular Jewish organisations and by the State of Israel. The exodus of Jews to Israel from the Soviet Union and from Ethiopia is notable.
