Here is another book about Japanese art from the Kodansha Library of Japanese Art (No. 7) titled: "Suzuki Harunobu (1725?- 1770)" by Ichitaro Kondo and translated and adapted by Kaoru Ogimi. This small paperback book (4 ½ x 6 ¾ inches, unpaginated, about 100 pages) was published by Charles E. Tuttle Company of Rutland Vermont and Tokyo Japan dated January 1957, the Second English printing. Please see the first page of the Introduction for further information about the Artist and his distinctive style known as Ukiyo-e. The book is very well illustrated with 51 plates, 29 of which are in color. Condition: This book is in very good condition. There has been some minor edge wear to the covers of this book (please see the photos). They may also be darkened with age or exposure to humidity (but the eye of the camera is more critical than the human eye). Inside the book is unmarked and the pages and plates are clean and bright throughout. I found one small mis-fold to one of the gatefold plates at the center of the book. The binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.

Tight, attractive copy of this charming Japanese biography of Abraham Lincoln for juveniles, authored by this group that called itself Jidou Bungakusha Kyokai (Youth Literary Scholar Association), which jointly authored many such titles for children. Since our knowledge of Japanese is minimal -- O.K., nonexistent -- we are unable to determine edition. Most unusual. Interesting that in the U.S. Benjamin Thomas's "Lincoln: A Biography" was published this same year and that interest in Lincoln seems to have been at an all-time high -- even, apparently, in the Orient. It's also fascinating that despite the illustrator's best efforts to depict in line drawings many scenes from Lincoln's life, not only the faces but even some of the settings and landscapes appear vaguely oriental.
