Sports Illustrated is an American sports magazine owned by Meredith Corporation. First published in August 1954. It was the first magazine with circulation over one million to win the National Magazine Award for General Excellence twice. There were two magazines named Sports Illustrated before the current magazine began on August 16, 1954. In 1936, Stuart Scheftel created Sports Illustrated with a target market for the sportsman. He published the magazine from 1936 to 1938. He then sold the name to Dell Publications, which released Sports Illustrated in 1949 and this lasted 6 issues before closing. There was no large-base, general, weekly sports magazine with a national following on actual active events. Time patriarch Henry Luce began considering whether his company should fill that gap. Luce decided the time was right. This issue is post the September 11, 2001 attack on America and addresses the adjustments made by Major League Baseball for the end of the season and the post-season games. The cover of this issue highlights Barry Bonds and the quest for the record of Home Runs hit in one season. There is a picture of Bonds at bat on the cover. The cover article, by Tom Verducci, is entitled Pushing 70 and starts on page 38. There is a small article on page 29 on "Big bucks for Bonds balls". There was also a small item on Cal Rikpen's final game which was on October 6th with some tickets selling for $2500. There is also a two-third page article on Gerald Ford, including his thoughts on the temporary shutting down of American sports in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus.
