First edition of this interesting and uncommon travelogue. Ikbal ali Shah was an Indian-Afghan author and diplomat who came to Britain as a young man to complete his education in Edinburgh, where he married the Scots author Morag Murray. He travelled widely undertaking assignments from the British Foreign Office, and became the publicist of a number of Eastern statesmen, King Abdullah of Jordan, Atatürk and the Aga Khan, writing popular biographies of these last two. He was also an active promoter of Sufism as a potential bridge between East and West, writing extensively on the subject and teaching Sufi "classes", an area in which he was succeeded and superseded by his son Idries Shah. The present work was reviewed by H. A. R. Gibbs alongside Philby's Arabia of the Wahabis in the journal of the Institute of International Affairs; "The Sirdar's book is the retort romantic to the classical severity of Mr Philby. Here is a well-spiced Eastern revue, featuring Afghan raisers, alchemists, enchanted walls, watery blue-eyed Bolshevists, singing dervishes, and mysterious caves, relieved by more commonplace political and literary interludes. Is it all true? How like the materially-minded West to ask such questions" (vol. 8, iss. 1, January 1929, p. 73). Macro 1272. Octavo. Photogravure frontispiece, and 10 other similar plates. Sir Gore Ousely [1770 - 1844] was an entrepreneur, diplomat and orientalist who spent the years 1811 - 14 around the Persia court; he was well versed in Persian languages and customs. The letter was reprinted in the Proceedings of the British and Foreign Bible Society for 1816.

No photography studio, place, and date indication. Mounted on pinkish thick cardboard. Naser Al-Din Shah Qajar was the fourth Shah of Qajar Iran from 5 September 1848 to 1 May 1896 when he was assassinated. He was the son of Mohammad Shah Qajar and Malek Jahan Khanom and the third longest-reigning monarch in Iranian history after Shapur II of the Sassanid dynasty and Tahmasp I of the Safavid dynasty. Nasser al-Din Shah had sovereign power for close to 51 years. He was the first modern Persian monarch who formally visited Europe and wrote of his travels in his memoirs. A modernist, he allowed the establishment of newspapers in the country and made use of modern forms of technology such as telegraphs, and photography and also planned concessions for railways and irrigation works. Despite his modernizing reforms on education, his tax reforms were abused by people in power, and the government was viewed as corrupt and unable to protect commoners from abuse by the upper class which led to increasing antigovernmental sentiments.
