Buch
Originalbroschur, 21*28,5 cm. Zustand: Gut. 32 S., zahlr. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

First edition, signed limited issue, number 19 of 100 copies only signed, stamped, and numbered by the author and printed on handmade paper. Premiered in 1934, Hsiung's adaptation of this classic Chinese play was a London and New York sensation, running for 1,000 nights in the West End and earning him the admiration of Bernard Shaw. Copies are scarce in this condition with the original jacket. Lady Precious Stream narrates the traditional Chinese story Wang Baochuan and Xue Pinggui, in which the beautiful and aristocratic Wang falls in love with Xue, a humble gardener. Set in the Tang dynasty, it is a classic examination of the overlap and tension between romance and social strictures. Lascelles Abercrombie's preface makes clear the power of Hsiung's adaptation: "I am not likely to forget the first time I read it. That July afternoon was enchanted, and so abides in my memory. But the enchanter was Mr. Hsiung" (p. vii). "If any person could be considered to represent twentieth-century China, from the overthrow of the Manchu Qing dynasty through to the establishment of the People's Republic, from long-gowned tradition to Western-suited modernity, from Classical Chinese to the vernacular, it is Shih-I Hsiung" (Wood, p. 1). Loosely inserted is the publisher's prospectus, on which a near-contemporary owner has commented, "a delicious book!" Frances Wood, "Introduction" in Zheng Da, Deh-I Hsiung & Yimin Foo, Shih-I Hsiung: A Glorious Showman, 2020. Octavo. Original grey boards, cream cloth backstrip, printed paper spine label, edges untrimmed. With dust jacket. Colour frontispiece tipped onto grey card, 2 similar plates and another plate, all by Hsu Pei-Hung; illustrations in text by Chiang Yee. Backstrip and jacket spine slightly toned, unclipped: a fine copy in like jacket.
