Still life played an important role within the oeuvre of Belgian expressionist and symbolist painter James Ensor (1860-…1949). The quality and significance of his intriguing, complex still lifes become clear when placed within the broader development of the genre in Belgium between 1830 and 1930. The still life, which in the early 19th century had degenerated into a decorative genre, devoid of content and artistic importance, was artistically revalued in various ways throughout the nineteenth century: by monumentalising it, by animating the image with dolls and masks, through exoticism, or by making it part of an interior. In this, Ensor's work is the most inventive. Moreover, his long career added to Ensor's artistic impact on many artists who from 1880 onwards lapped towards modernism. His late still lifes - often transformations of early works - are little known and intriguing. Besides an overlook of this important part of Ensor's oeuvre, the book offers an overview of the 19th-century Belgian academic tradition of decorative painting, with intriguing work by lesser-known painters such as Jean Robie, Hubert Bellis, Frans Mortelmans and Henri De Braekeleer, and forgotten female artists such as Berthe Art and Alice Ronner. De veelzijdige Anna Boch (1848-1936) was niet alleen een getalenteerde kunstenaar maar ook een goed geïnformeerde verzamelaar, een groot mecenas en een enthousiaste reiziger die van muziek en architectuur hield. Al…s enige vrouw was ze lid van de prominente kunstenaarsverenigingen Les XX en La Libre Esthétique en werd ze door haar collega?s op gelijke voet behandeld. Geïnspireerd door geestesgenoten als Théo van Rysselberghe, Paul Signac en Georges Seurat legde Anna Boch zich toe op een persoonlijke variant van het neo-impressionisme. Anna Bochs heldere schilderijen illustreren haar zoektocht naar lijn en kleur. Haar passie voor de natuur bracht haar naar afgelegen plaatsen en deed haar dromen van de schoonheid van bucolische landschappen die ze wilde doorgronden. Ze hield van de zee en wist het licht en de reflectie ervan op de kust op een weergaloze manier te vangen en om te zetten in intrigerende maar bovenal tijdloze composities. Dit boek presenteert haar oeuvre in meer dan 100 werken en plaatst Anna Boch resoluut in de kunstgeschiedenis van de negentiende en de twintigste eeuw. Dit boek verschijnt onder redactie van Virginie Devillez, met medewerking van Stefan Huygebaert en Wendy Van Hoorde naar aanleiding van de tentoonstelling Anna Boch, een impressionistische reis van 1 juli tot 5 november 2023 in Mu.ZEE, Oostende, en van 3 februari tot 26 mei 2024 in Musée de Pont-Aven 1620 g.
