The British Council launched the Media in Society Project in 2004 to build a network of media expertise across 6 countries in the region (Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, and Syria) to raise awareness of key social issues among the young such as high unemployment, and promote positive social change. It was supported in the UK by The Guardian Newspaper, and BBC World Service Trust, and coordinated in each project country by Advisory Boards made up of leading national media figures. The idea for political cartoons emerged in Syria, and was taken forward by Ali Ferzat with Steve Bell. The exhibition, drawing on work by some of the region's leading cartoonists, launched at The Guardian Newsroom in London, before touring the region.
