Original leather with a gold-embossed narrow spine and a gold-embossed colored title label on the narrow spine as well as marbled edges, folio (34 x 24 cm). The cover is rubbed, somewhat stained, corners and edges are bumped. The narrow spine is slightly chipped and frayed towards the capitals, the back cover is slightly worm-eaten, the binding is somewhat loose. The covers appear to have been professionally restored in some parts of the original. Originally published in Amsterdam and Paris between 1641 and 1650, "Annotationes in Novum Testamentum" (Annotations on the New Testament) reveals Grotius' plea for an undogmatic Christian faith. Indeed, the author's aim in publishing this work was to promote the unity of the Christian churches in the spirit of the early Christian Church, when such unity, according to him at least, still existed. In blatant contravention of Reformed doctrine, Hugo Grotius emphasizes the importance of oral tradition as a supplement to, but on the same level as, written sources, in doing so, he makes a distinction between the law of nature from the precepts and admonitions to Christians.
