Værket, der er forsynet med meget dygtigt udførte gengivelser af kirkerne ude som inde, giver et yderst interessant stykke dokumentation af nogle af landets vigtigste middelalderlige arkitekturværker i brydningen mellem århundreders forsømmelse og så det uvejr af historicistisk fornyelsestrang, der gik over landet omkring 1860 og årtierne derefter, inspireret af Helgo Zetterwalls slagtning af Lunds Domkirke. Det satte sig de værste spor i vandaliseringen af Viborg Domkirke og rundkirken i Bjernede (ikke med her), men blev gennemført i bedste mening. Nu skulle middelalderen genopvækkes. Billeddelen om Viborg dækker storartet både før og efter. Ribe Domkirke fremstår i sin oprindelige form, og aldrig er der lavet smukkere gengivelser af den pragtfulde katedral i Aarhus (endnu med den lille flade tårnhætte fra 1770'erne).
