Breaking into the NHL in 1946 with the Detroit Red Wings, he played in the NHL for 26 seasons, 25 with the Red Wings, then joined the WHA with the Houston Aeros and Hartford Whalers (he played in the WHA with both of his sons, Mark and Marty. He won 4 Stanley Cups with Detroit and was the all-time leading goal scorer in the NHL until his record was broken by Wayne Gretzky. He was named to 21 All Star teams, won 6 Hart Trophies, and 6 Ross Trophies.

On the printed decorative half-title page, he inscribes and signs boldly in orange fineline: "To Kevin / Best of luck / Gordon Howe 9" and below this Colleen Howe signs, also in orange fineline, and below this their oldest son Marty Howe (born 1954), who played pro hockey for several teams from 1973 to 1985, also signs boldly in red fineline, adding "1999." Not to be left out, tipped to the facing page is a heavy stock 5" X 3" card signed boldly in blue ballpoint by the Howes' younger son, Mark Howe (born 1955), who played pro hockey for several teams between 1973 and 1995!
