Zustand: Sehr gut. Umschlag berieben, papierbedingt gebräunt. - The argument of this book is that certain families, because of their position in the social structure, assume work, community, and other social roles that facilitate reliance upon institutional and not individual arrangements. The findings here suggest that though many health programs are developed with objectives that supposedly are congruent with the ethos of independence, the end result is likely to be a failure. Giving treatment in a well-run clinic apparently fails to indoctrinate parents in such a way as to have the hoped-for effects upon the later habits of the child or family as a whole. Contrary to what one might expect, the use of a public dental clinic-the subject under investigation in this study-by young children does not result in improved dental health in adolescence. The investigators show with substantial empirical support that those children who go for dental attention to public clinics, later when no longer eligible because of age, tend to neglect themselves, avoiding dental care except in emergencies. Furthermore, the likelihood of a teenager's continuing in a preventive program is related to the dental and medical habits of his family. This study reveals that a partial explanation for the lack of care is financial, i.e., the absence of free services to low-income families constitutes a barrier to the continuity of care from childhood into adolescence. But the decisive variable is the family's resort to an institutional or bureaucratic framework in meeting many of life's problems.
