Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st ed., 4th printing ; xiv, 194 p. : ill. (some col.) ; 24 cm. ISBN 9781930897083 1930897081 LCCN 2002510026 ; LC SB61 .C67 2001 Dewey 635.0922 ; off-white textured boards in pictorial dustjacket ; SIGNED by both authors on the title page ; "One spring morning a lady walking through a garden in the Midwest was fascinated by a row of handsome, vigorous hollies. They were just what she needed for her own garden, and she asked her host what they were. "Those are Nellie Stevens hollies," was the reply. She looked again and couldn't help but wonder about the name. Who in the world is Nellie Stevens, and how did her name ever become associated with this plant? She noted other intriguing names, and she asked similar questions. She saw a beautifulblue clematis and wondered if Betty Corning was still alive and what stories she had to tell. She wondered about the places and people whose names are associated with so many popular garden plants. She is not alone. If necessity is the mother of invention, curiosity is the mother of research. In many cases, we wonder not what our gardens grow, but who our gardens grow. Until now, these accounts have not been compiled and unfortunately, many of the people are disappearing, their stories with them. Now gardeners can enjoy the beauty of their plants and delight in the tales they tell." ; Contents: Anna, Illinois -- Arnold Arboretum -- Janes Bath -- Lole Benedict -- ray Bracken -- Luther Burbank -- Molly Bush -- Cedar lane Farm -- John Champneys, Phillippe Noisette -- Corbett, maryland -- Betty Corning -- John Creech -- Roy Davidson -- Vince and Barbara Dooley -- Eco-Gardens -- Katie Ferguson -- Henry and Sally Fuller -- Fred Galle -- Gardenview Horticultural park -- Azilda Gerbing -- Goodness Grows -- Kim Hawks -- mary Gibson Henry -- Poly Hill -- Andre Iseli -- Tina James -- Joseph Kassab -- Hella Lacy -- Michael Lindsey -- Carol Mackie -- Frank N Meyer -- Montrose Nursery -- David Mooberry -- Mt. Original Wraps. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket, as Issued. First Edition. First and only printing of the true first edition of the third Granta (New Series) - complete with the John Blanche illustration with OUP advert on the reverse inserted at page 108 - the illustration repeated on the front cover. A very rare first edition of the third issue of the reborn Granta, champion of new writing, which grew to be one of the best known, most widely read and longest enduring of modern day literary magazines. Includes two chapters from Salman Rushdie's "Midnight's Children" (the only pre-publication of any part of that book). ***Very good in mustard-yellow black printed thin card covers, with the matt surface very slightly rubbed and discoloured. Slight off-setting from a price label which appears to have been removed from the front cover. Edges of covers slightly rubbed. No serious creases or tears. Light reading creases to the spine. Spine slightly rolled from reading but spine tight. Internally also very good with no inscriptions or annotations. Pages clean. Top corners of last few pages very slightly creased, otherwise no creases or tears. ***216 pages including notes on contributors at the back of the magazine. 210mm x 146mm. ******Contents: Salman Rushdie: Midnight's Children (first part); Angela Carter: Cousins; Desmond Hogan: Southern Birds; Alan Sillitoe: A Scream of Toys; Emma Tennant: Alice fell; Russell Hoban: Riddley Walker; J.K. Klavans: God, He Was Good. ***With a section titled "A Symposium on the British Novel, with contributions by: Lorna Sage, Chris Bigsby, Frederick Bowers, James Gindin and Christine Brooke-Rose. ***The first and only printing of Granta 3 (New Series) containing the two chapters "The Perforated Sheet" (p. 17-32) and "Mercurochrome" (p. 32-46) which are the earliest publication of parts of Salman Rushdie's novel "Midnight's Children" to appear in any form, along with Russell Hoban's "Riddley Walker". Copies of the first three issues of Granta are very hard to come by now, especially in collectable condition. Grantas 1,2 and 3 are now almost always seen only as reprints with a new cover, with a design which became the Granta house style for all issues subsequent to this one. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. John Blanche (Cover design and inserted page) (illustrator).…
