Cloth. Zustand: Very Good Indeed. Unnamed (illustrator). First edition. A first edition, scarce copy of this work on the world of art and sculptor by Malvina Hoffman. The first and scarce edition copy of Malvina Hoffman'sA Sculptor's Odyssey.Malvina Hoffman was a well known sculptor and author, especially famous for her bronze sculptures of people. In 1929, the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago commissioned her with the task of creating anthropologically accurate sculptures of people of diverse nationalities and races. She then travelled the world and created over 105 sculptures not only in bronze, but also marble and stone, which were installed at the museum's Hall of Men in 1933. This volume leads to the inner story of this achievement through her early years of struggle, and contains 273 illustrations. It is a fascinating tour through the world of art in the early 1900s.During the 1960s, people started questioning the exhibit, as one reviewer wrote to American Historical Review that "the sculptures in the Races of Mankind had perpetuated an older typological approach by presenting 'race' in the form of literally static bronze figures depicting idealized racial 'types'." The Hall of Men was deinstalled shortly after. In 2016, fifty of those sculptures were on display at the museum in an exhibition called Looking at Ourselves: Rethinking the Sculptures of Malvina Hoffman. In the publisher's original cloth binding. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with titles stamped in gilt to front board and spine. Externally, very smart with minor shelfwear and minor bumping to extremities and head and tail of spine. Internally, firmly bound. Hinges slightly strained at times but firm due to the type of binding and size of book. Faint scattered spotting, particularly to first and last few leaves and title page, otherwise text pages are generally bright and clean. Gilted top edge. Contains 273 and illustrations. Very Good Indeed. book.
