With many black and white reproductions, plus tipped-in colour plates. Frances Mary Hodgkins was a New Zealand painter chiefly of landscape, and for a short period was a designer of textiles. Born in Dunedin, she was educated at Dunedin School of Art, then became an art teacher, earning money to study in England. A modernist artist, hallmarks such as abstracted, simplified forms and a strong emphasis on colour values and relationships. She was considered to be a key figure in British Modernism, also considered one of New Zealand's most prestigious and influential painters. However, it is the work from her life in Europe, rather than her home country, on which her reputation rests.…

First edition, first printing, inscribed on the front free endpaper "to David and Norman with Gratitude and Affection, Eric McCormick", and with a loosely inserted monochrome original photograph captioned by McCormick "Frances Hodgkins London 1920" of her posing in front of tapestries with ancient Egyptian motifs. The photograph was part of McCormick's "Frances Hodgkins (1869-1947) Centennial Memorial Exhibition" held 1-22 June 1969 at the Christchurch Art Gallery in New Zealand. "One of New Zealand's most celebrated artists, Frances Hodgkins spent most of her life overseas. During a professional career that spanned 56 years, she earned a place among the British avant-garde of the 1930s and 1940s - the first New Zealand-born artist to achieve such stature" ('Death of Frances Hodgkins', on the website of the Ministry for Culture and Heritage of New Zealand, accessed 14/01/21). Spine ends a touch bumped, very faint foxing to boards, the binding otherwise firm and unfaded, two small spots of browning to fore edge, else internally clean and fresh.
