El propósito del presente libro es suplir la falta, que hace tiempo viene sintiéndose, de una antología de textos lingüísticos representativos de los principales dialectos de la España medieval. Al escoger los textos que a continuación ofrecemos, hemos intentado reunir, dentro de los límites de un manual de proporciones relativamente modestas, una colección de textos que sirviera de punto de partida para los estudiantes universitarios que quieran conocer a fondo este interesantísimo aspecto de la filología española. Se trata, pues, de un libro hecho principalmente para estudiantes, por lo que hemos preferido omitir, salvo en algunos casos de especial interés, todo texto que pudiera considerarse como mezcla de dialectos, no obstante los problemas que tal criterio puede plantear, problemas que no son para resueltos en un libro de esta índole.
