Hirschfeld (1742-1792) was a professor of art and art history at the University of Kiel. His views on landscape were almost antithetical to the Baroque garden as exemplified by the work of Le Nostre and Le Blond - a type of garden which he actually associated with political absolutism. Instead, he advocated the informality and asymmetry of English picturesque examples as more suited to contemporary democratic tendencies. Hirschfeld's garden theory grew out of his definition of gardens as "places where people can enjoy all the advantages of rural life, all the pleasures of the seasons, with comfort and tranquillity" (Millard 1993, iii, p.58). Hirschfeld was imbued with the contemporary search for expression in nature. He here embraces the ideals which promoted the English garden, and examines the architecture, history and literature of all nations that combined to offer proportions and sentiment which could be translated to the microcosm of the garden. His broad frame of reference includes ideas from works of travel including those of James Cook and Du Halde; among contemporary theorists, philosophers and poets he cites the works of Thomas Whately, David Hume and Thomas Gray. As aesthetist and philosopher he puts forward the selection and siting of aspects of the garden to produce emotive though natural effects: the distribution of trees and shrubs, lawns, water and rocks; architectural constructions including retreats or features such as hermitages, chapels, ruined follies, monuments, also the placing of epigrammatic inscriptions; he describes types of gardens and the importance of their apt relationship to the site, climate, character of the region, or as adapted to illustrate a specific season. The fine illustrations (engraved plates in text) are of two kinds, equally attractive: the plan type, and painterly compositions with landscaped background. The majority are engraved by Geyser after Sch rich; other engravers include Thoenert, Sch"nberg and Liebe. Most of the drawings were executed by Jean Henri Brandt who worked with Hirschfeld over the whole project, but signed only a few. Hirschfeld's magnum opus was an immediate success in Europe; Goethe raptured over the enthusiasm he inspired, and his ideas and examples were quoted, translated and put into practice by succeeding generations. Christian Hirschfeld (1742 - 1792), Enlightenment scholar and rationalist is perhaps best known for his five volume work on gardens. Published in German as the 'Theorie der Gartenkunst' at the same time as this French edition, Hirschfeld attempted to delineate the garden with the scientific powers of his scholarship while still allowing a natural and essential sentimentality to remain. Feted as the man who introduced the 'English' garden to Scandinavia, this Kiel University professor devoted an enormous quantity of time and effort to this, his magnum opus. The work treats all aspects of the garden and is noteworthy for its descriptions of many of the finest European gardens of the day. Hirschfeld's scholarship did not cease here, however, for his chief aim was to depict the garden in its entirety, thus many of the illustrations are architectural, or depict features such as bridges and grottos, for in his opinion, there was no point in attempting the design of a garden without taking into account its purpose and indeed its situation.
