First edition. Numerous photographic illustrations. Japanese text. Large oblong 8vo. Original strong flexible boards, minor wear to spine, but overall a very good copy. Unpaginated. Tokyo, Kokusai Hodo, dated: Showa 19 [i.e. This photobook is a typical example of the photo-reportage (hodo shashin) style that was popular during the first half of the 1940s. It explains the production and working of the newly developed electric locomotives as opposed to steam engines. This beautifully designed children's book was produced during the final years of the war. According to the imprint 20,000 copies of this work were printed, however this is very likely to be an act of wilful disinformation in order to hide the enormous problems with paper supplies at the time. One double-page showing a railway map of Japan and the occupied areas has purposely been glued together, clearly for political reasons. We have seen a number of other copies similarly afflicted. The book was published by Kokusai Hodo, led by Natori Yonosuke and the editor-in-chief Harada Mitsuo. Book-design by Hara Hiromu. Rare.

Original boards and dust jacket. Minor damage to spine and folds of dust jacket. Otherwise near fine. Housed in original card box, slightly stained. 1 v., complete. 53 leaves. 25.8 x 18.2 cm. Soft cover. Zustand: Near Fine. This issue of a war propaganda magazine focused on Manchuria. The series was inspired by the Soviet propaganda magazine "USSR in Construction", which was published in Western languages during the Stalin era. Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Yasuzo Nojima (Nojima Yasuzo, 1889-1964) played a significant role as a Japanese pictorialist in the early 20th century. He co-founded the photo magazine Koga with NAKAYAMA Iwata (1895 1949) and KIMURA Ihei (1901 1974) and owned the art gallery Kabutoya Gado, which was associated with the sharakaba-ha literary movement. The book at hand, titled "Posthumous Works," features Nojima's most important works, aligning with the modernist idea of the artist's immortality. A constellation of prominent Japanese writers, critics, and photographers contributed essays to honor their colleague. Text in Japanese. 1 volume. 25x26.3cm. 54 plates colour and b&w. Unpaginated. Cloth binding. Original slipcase worn and repaired. Book is in fine and the case in near fine conditions. May require extra shipping due to size and weight.
