Nine different chapters including Holiday Houses and Other Diversions all illustrated in black and white plus colour. Hicks studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London before embarking on his career in inter…ior design in 1954, with a well publicised makeover of his mother's London house. With antique dealer Tom Parr he opened Hicks and Parr (1956-9) and in 1959 his own shop David Hicks Ltd, opened on Lowndes Street, Knightsbridge. Hicks's adventurous colour combinations and furniture arrangements became associated with the 'Swinging Sixties' scene. In 1960 Hicks married Lady Pamela Mountbatten, following which he had further aristocratic and state commissions, including his design of the nightclub on the QE2 (1969). Hicks wrote eight books including David Hicks on Living - with Taste (1968).

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: fine. Second printing. Quarto (12-1/4" x 9-1/2"). 302pp. Index and bibliography. Color photo dust jacket with red spine lettered in gilt, over gilt lettered and decorated red boards. Profusely illustrated with photographs (most in color), plus a few design drawings. A fine,…as new copy. Abstract: "David Hicks is acknowledged as one of the most important interior designers of the late twentieth century, in the company of Albert Hadley and Billy Baldwin. Known for his bold use of color, eclecticism, and geometric designs in carpets and textiles, Hicks turned English decorating on its head in the '50s and '60s. His trademark use of electrifying color combinations, and mixing antiques, modern furniture, and abstract paintings became the "in style" for the chic of the day, including Vidal Sassoon and Helena Rubinstein. By the '70s, David Hicks was a brand; his company was making wallpaper, fabrics, and linens and had outposts in eight countries, including the U.S. where he worked with the young Mark Hampton, and where his wallpaper was used in the White House. "My greatest contribution as an interior designer has been to show people how to use bold color mixtures, how to use patterned carpets, how to light rooms, and how to mix old with new," he stated in his 1968 work, David. Hicks on Living - with Taste, the last authoritative book on his work. Written by his son Ashley Hicks, who has unprecedented access to Hicks's archives, personal photos, journals, and scrapbooks, this is a vibrantly illustrated celebration of a half century of stunning interiors."-- (Jacket) Contents: Almost a miracle, 1929 -- Lord Essex, 1936 -- Endings and beginnings, 1944 -- Art school and a first journey, 1945 -- Sergeant Hicks, 1947 -- Back in the world, 1949 -- The first house, 1952 -- A career begins, 1953 -- Hicks and Parr, 1955 -- America, 1957 -- Pamela Mountbatten, 1959 -- Britwell, 1960 -- Starting afresh, 1960 -- Egypt, Britwell, and India, 1961 -- St. Leonards Terrace, 1962 -- Africa, Petulia, and Iris, 1964 -- Roquebrune, 1966 -- New York, 1968 -- Touring America, 1970 -- Europe, 1971 -- Götterdämmerung, 1972 -- Baronscourt, 1975 -- Master of the Salters, 1976 -- The last flourish, 1976 -- The end of the dream, 1977 -- The last sunset, 1979 -- Living with design, 1979 -- A wedding, 1981 -- Travelling onward, 1983 -- Vila Verde, 1987 -- Into the garden, 1988 -- The sixtieth birthday present, 1989 -- The end of another dream, 1992 -- The last years, 1995 -- The end, 1998.
