Zustand: as new. Montreal: McGill-Queen's University Press, 1977. Orig. cloth binding. Dustjacket. 246 pp. xix. Index. Bibliography. Condition : as new. - During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the French Crown closed down thousands of local hospices, maladreries, and small hospitals that had been refuges for the sick and poor, supposedly acting in the name of efficiency, better management, and elimination of duplicate services. Its true motive, however, was to expropriate their revenues and holdings. Hickey shows how, in spite of government efforts, a countermovement emerged that to some degree foiled the Crown's attempts to suppress local hospitals. Charitable institutions, churchmen inspired by the new message of the Catholic Reformation, women's religious congregations, and community elites defied intervention measures, resisted proposed changes, and revitalized the very type of institution the Crown was trying to shut down. Hickey's conclusions are supported by a study of eight local hospitals, which allows him to measure the impact of Crown decisions on the day-to-day functioning of these local institutions. Challenging the interpretations of Michel Foucault and other historians, Hickey throws new light on an important area of early modern French history. Condition : as new copy. ISBN 9780773515406. Keywords : HISTORY OF MEDICINE, history of medicine.

Endpapers of book by Daniel Buren. "Since public museums came into being in the late 18th century, artists have looked upon them with a mixture of reverence, complicity, suspicion, and disdain. In The Museum as Muse, artists of many persuasions speak their minds about museums, their functions and spaces, their practices and politics, and their relationship to the art they contain. More than 60 artists are represented by a wide range of works: photographs of museum patrons by Henri Cartier-Bresson and Elliot Erwitt; 'personal museums' and 'cabinets of curiosities' by Charles Wilson Peale, Marcel Duchamp, and Claes Oldenburg; fantasies of the destruction or transformation of museums by Hubert Robert, Ed Ruscha, and Christo and more, including works created especially for this project by contemporary artists, and an anthology of statements and writings by artists about museums. This volume was published to accompany an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York." -- publisher's statement. Very Good. Light wear to dust-jacket including a 6 mm. tear to spine edge and bumping of upper edge of recto. Light yellowing of page edges. Contents otherwise clean and unmarked.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Mack, Sara S (illustrator). Neuware - This is the story of the unexpected dreamer, Dr. Glenn Hickey, a counter-intuitive missionary to Brazil from Mt Ida, Arkansas who made his life into a series of faith adventures. He was intensely nerdy in using technology to serve his mission, a quiet preacher, and travel-holic. His life was a pioneering journey of how to reach your human-spirit potential by accessing the inner child's creativity, energy and joy.He aspired and was blessed in many areas, including Barbershop quartet harmony, New Testament Greek mastery, and international ham radio guru-dom. He focused his mission on Recife, Brazil between 1964 and 1978. He became a 'native' in Portuguese fluency and cultural identity, deeply influencing both Brazilian nationals and his missionary colleagues with a gentle spirit and leadership gifts.A lifelong road cyclist, He covered thousands of miles in Europe, Brazil, and the U.S., always stopping to visit seriously with locals and connect meaningfully with folks from other cultures and faiths. A talented barbershop baritone, he moved audiences frequently with the original Ouachita Baptist University Quartet and later with his soprano life partner Dorothy Hickey. He gelled his Ham Radio communication passion with the Partners of the Americas, setting up many citizen-exchanges between the states of Pernambuco, Brazil and Georgia, U.S.A. , culminating with an invitation to head a delegation to the White House by President Jimmy and First Lady Rosalynn Carter. He was a progressive force for women in ministry, children in the process of poverty, hunger relief in Arkansas, and the Partners of the Americas. Calling diverse churches to be inspired for missions they could only accomplish together, he was a inspirational diplomat in a time of deep division among Southern Baptists in Arkansas.A brave preacher and teacher who could blend academic mastery of the biblical Greek texts with captivating storytelling, he was not afraid to think and speak out of the box on how to interpret the bible, human relationships, Christian mission, and patriotism. Specializing in the parables of Jesus, he could apply biblical texts to modern life with humor, insight and disarming gentleness. Dr. Glenn Hickey's life was a shout out to all who think real Missionaries have given up fun, adventure, and discovery. He said yes, the missionary life is available to all who want abundant, creative joy!
