Binding is slightly shaky. Boards have mild edge wear with slight rubbing to surfaces. Soft crushing to spine ends with splits. Book is slightly forward leaning. Light staining to front board. Light tanning to spine and edges. Speckled white marking to front board.

Portrait frontispiece with foxed tissue-guard, and one other portrait, xvi + 627pp, appendices, prior owner named bookplate on the front pastedown, rear inner hinge cracked but holding firm, brown cloth covered boards lettered and ruled in black and gilt on the spine, very minor wear at head and tail and corners. A clean and sturdy copy. Sir Henry Lawrence, a man of exceptional talent and ability, (1806-1857) wrote a number of essays and books on Indian subjects but is probably best remembered for his administrative ability, his energy, his sympathies with the Indian aristocracy, his high character and his tragic death in the siege of Lucknow.
