Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Hardcover. Eleanor Carroll Chilton (1898-1949) was the daughter of a U.S. senator and graduated from Smith College in 1922. She is primarily known as a novelist. She published her first novel, Shadows Waiting, in 1926, and her second novel, The Burning Fountain, in 1929 while she was living in Lond…on. In London Chilton also published with Herbert Agar (her partner) and Willis Fisher this volume of poetry. In 1933, Chilton married Agar, a poet, critic, newspaper columnist, and winner of the Pulitzer Prize for history. Chilton's last novel, Follow the Furies, appeared in 1935. This was her most well-known novel about a daughter, following her father's rationalist philosophy, who performs a mercy killing of her mother and subsequently commits suicide. Herbert Agar (1897-1980) was an American journalist and historian, and an editor of the Louisville Courier-Journal. Agar won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1934 for his 1933 book The People's Choice, a critical look at the American presidency. Little is known of Willis Fisher. 8vo. Off white paper backed bluish green paper covered boards with black title to front board and to spine. One bump to bottom edge of front board and browning to top edge of both boards and spine. Six of the eight items in good condition, lightly aged and worn; the other two showing heavier signs of age and wear. The six sets of accounts from the 'Steward's Office' - for various terms between Christmas 1879 and Christmas 1882 - are each described by Harington on the reverse as 'Battels'. All six are printed forms, over a…single 8vo page, headed 'Christ Church' and laid out in the same style, and completed in manuscript with the details of the expenditure of 'Mr Richard Harington' (the last being the greatest, at £49 12s 7d). They give itemised sums for 'University Dues', 'Establishment' ('Fixed charge' and 'Varying'), 'Tuition', 'Room Rent', 'Battels, as per Weekly Account', 'Glazier', 'Rates, &c.' and 'Damage Account'. Four carry receipts signed over a stamp, two by Ackland and two by another party. Also present are two receipts made out and signed by Acland, on printed grey-paper slips headed 'Christ Church, Oxford', one from October 1881 and the other from January 1883.
