Published in 1938, this is a large cloth bound folding linen backed chart compiled by Herbert Bedford between the years 1921-1938 in which he lists famous architecturally interesting buildings, famous sculptures, Poets, Painters and Composers from 500BC to 1900, the whole making up a fascinating historical chart of human achievement in architecture and the arts, the chart measures 35 inches by 31 inches approx., and folds down into is hard cloth covers to measure 10 inches by 6 inches approx., some wear to the cloth on edges and corners, foxing to reverse of the chart, minor edge wear else in nice general condition.

The chart measures 89 x 115 cm folded to 29 x 24 cm. In green cloth boards lettered gilt at the front. Cover slightly marked and slightly faded else very good, chart in excellent condition. Signed presentation from the author "To Betty Drake from Herbert Bedford December 1938." Herbert Bedford (1867-1945) was the husband of the composer Liza Lehmann and was also a composer, but he excelled in other things besides music. He painted miniatures and wrote books, some of which were about music, like the Essay on Modern Unaccompanied Song and a Life of Robert Schumann but he also published a survey of The Heroines of George Meredith illustrated by twenty of Bedford's own miniatures, while his catholicity of interests was borne out by this 1938 Chart of the Arts. While serving in London's anti-aircraft defences in the First World War he invented an AA ranging device which the War Office adopted for the instruction of all AA gunnery officers. Betty Drake was an American actress and the third wife of Cary Grant. Signedes.
