Green half-leather, worn, one menu per day per page for most days between 22 Sept.1882 and 6 Jan. 1884. A bookplate is the only clue to the family the volume belonged to, the coat of arms and motto ("Loyaulté n a honte") of the Dukes of Newcastle-under-Lyme, specifically at this time (1880s) Henry Pelham-Clinton, 7th Duke of New…castle-under-Lyne (1864-1928) whose family seat was Clumber House, nr. Worksop, Notts (restored after a fire in 1879; presumably the home of this volume). The menus are usually written on a basic template of printed headings (on alternate pages, rectos) as follows: DINING ROOM [Potages \ Poissons | Entrées | Relevés | Rôts | Légumes | Entremets | Relevés] | LUNCHEON | SERVANTS HALL | BREAKFAST. Many of the blank versos have full or specific, special menus (e.g. "Diner de M. Forbes" and others - circa eight), but as the book is used up the blanks get fully used in date sequence, thiough several are a day out of sequence (MS.17th preceding template 16th). Dishes are usually expressed in French (exceptions being Scotch Broth, Plum Pudding & Brandy and Mince Pies for Christmas). Breakfast is detailed the least. The heading is usually "Menu de [22 September etc]", "Breakfast" only occasionally filled in, frequent pencilled additions and changes. Only the stub survives of the page for 26 Février 1883. Most of the text is in the same hand, Chef, Butler (?) and the menu for the day was presumably displayed.

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. While shunning the limelight, Newcastle was an influential figure in British politics; it was through his lobbying that his cousin Sir Henry Clinton was appointed commander-in-chief of the British forces in America during the American Revolution. According to Timothy Mowl's 1996 biography of Hora…ce Walpole, Newcastle was 'famed for an unusually large penis', which he deployed on both sexes. On one side of a 12 x 19 piece of laid paper, with large triangle cut at top right (not near signature). In good condition, lightly aged, with three neat fold lines (not through signature). Large clear signature 'Newcastle', between two short pieces of text in the hand of Henry Saxby, with his small neat signature 'Henry Saxby'. On the reverse is the 'Debentur' entry in Latin, with marginal note 'Out of 1/3 Tonns since 8th. March 1706.' In another hand at foot: 'Examd: Record: 11 Oct: 1773 [.]'. Most of the side with the signature is blank, with portrait orientation, while the entry side is filled with landscape text, with slight loss through diagonal crop at bottom right.

Three pages, 8vo, bifolium, small stain, otherwise good condition. He comments initially on a cutting (from a newspaper?). Singular to relate there is more truth in that cutting than you wd imagine. Before leaving London I had persuaded Miss Kellogg to come to Brighton for the race week: I got a letter from her to say [.]. I had… a very bad Goodwood & lost heavily the first day at Brighton, and wrote in the evening begging her top come, as I could npot win a bet, and she might change my luck: the second day was as bad as the first, but she came down to Brighton that evening for the Cup Day: Speculum won the Cup, I landed between 5 and 6000, and gave her a bracelet to commemorate his victory = If I remeber right I did win very nearly 10,000 that day, but it did little more than clear one over Goodwood and the first two days. | Excuse a scrawl [.]."Note: [His] taste for gambling resulted in his fleeing the country in 1860 to escape his debts, which had then reached £230,000. In 1861, he married Henrietta Hope, heiress of the wealthy Henry Thomas Hope, in Paris. As part of the marriage settlement, his debts were paid and an income of £50,000 a year settled on the couple. Extensive lands in England and Ireland were also added to his family's holdings by inheritance from his father-in-law, although Pelham-Clinton himself never controlled them due to the terms of that testament.".

3pp., 4to. Bifolium. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. Newcastle has already been informed of Price's wish to be placed in the Colonial Office by 'the Duke of Roxburghe and others, whose interest in his wefare, would have great weight with me, if I felt that I could consistently with the present claims upon me, hold out any hope… of complying with Mr. Price's request'. He is 'not in a position to say what arrangements' he intends to make 'in consequence of the death of Captain Booth', as he is 'very desirous of extending, as far as possible, a system of promotion in the Colonial Service', and has to consider 'many who have many years of residence in unhealthy climate to found their appeals upon'. From the Hankey banking archive.

one-page folio with conjugate blank leaf. (horizontal & vertical folds). NEWCASTLE, Henry Fiennes Pelham-Clinton, 2nd Duke of [1720-1794]. Manuscript Document, Signed, dated January 23, 1773. Addressed to and signed by Lord Newcastle, as Auditor of the Receipt of His Majesty's Exchequer, the document requests payment to Edward H…arland for his services as one of His Majesty's Messengers attending him as Chancellor and Under-Treasurer of the Exchequer and for his services provided to the King. Also signed by Lord Northington and Edward Harland. Newcastle was reputed to have been a lover of Horace Walpole, with whom he quarreled and separated while on the Grand Tour. He was also the cousin of Sir Henry Clinton, a career army officer, for whom the Duke lobbied successfully to be appointed Commander-in-Chief of the British forces in America during the American Revolution.
