The orders provide a snapshot of the British Army in the late Victorian period, outlining modes of dress, rules around absences, procedures for funerals and court martial, as well as many details on the running of Aldershot Garrison. This copy has been maintained and upda…ted through to 1895 by a member of the division. This volume was issued approximately four decades after Aldershot was opened in 1854. In this period the camp was facing the dual pressure of crumbling facilities and an increasing demand. In 1890, Secretary of State Edward Stanhope proposed to "add to [Aldershot] a battery of Royal Artillery and six battalions of infantry. [and] re-construct a large portion of the existing camps" (Vickers). Meanwhile, the division saw the leadership of a number of visionaries including Evelyn Wood, who "promoted more modern training, abolishing drill and ceremonies in favour of greater emphasis on field exercises, including night operations" (ODNB). This copy has been updated with corrigenda sheets dated April 1891 to March 1893 and additionally with ink corrections dating until May 1895. They cover additional regulations such as prohibitions on playing quoits and painting firing targets on buildings, along with updates to uniforms and procedures. Paul H.
