First edition. 1 sheet. Illus. with 1 engraving. 17 x 12 1/2 inches. Two facing pages, folded open. On the left side is a partially printed indenture form completed in manuscript providing a deed of rights to an improved safety bridle and line, signed by Stehman and Christ of H. H. Stehman & Co., on 24 August, 1866. They granted production and sale rights to Amos and Edward Reeder for Bucks County for $300. On the right side are the directions, illustrated with an engraving of a horse's head. Given the existence of a printed form, and the limitation of the sales area, this was no doubt a franchise intended to be granted to multiple producers. There is a revenue stamp affixed at the left margin. The original patent from the Commissioner's Report reads "No. 52,139. Amos B. Christ and Henry H. Stehman, Manor Township, Penn. Safety Bridle. January 23, 1866. This invention consists in the application to the bit of a check snap, which is brought over side pulleys in buckles, and carried through the ring of the bit, and in attaching short branches, on to the ring on said safety or check strap, and the other elastic attached to the ring of the bit in the ordinary manner, so that a single line can be used either in driving one or two horses, by the use of the branch attachments. Claim: First, the combination of a strap E and roller E, with a safety strap B, having one end affixed to the ring A of the bridle bit, and carried up over a roller and then down through the ring A of the bit to its connecting and retaining ring D, in the manner and for the purpose specified. Second, a short elastic branch L affixed to the ring A of the bridle bit, together with a branch F attached to the ring D on the safety strap B. When both branches are connected to the ends of an ordinary single line, in the manner and for the purpose specified." (1867, p. 348). A near fine copy, a few minor spots and folds. Matted and framed, size 22 x 17 1/2 inches.

Both items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. According to Short's entry in the Oxford DNB, he 'had many friends among the Tractarians, and wrote (but did not publish) a defence of Tract 90, though he voted for the condemnation of W. G. Ward's Ideal of a Christian Church in 1845. In 1846 he delivered at Oxford the Bampton lectures entitled The Witness of the Spirit with our Spirit'. ONE: 'Tuesday | June 4'. 3pp., 12mo. He begins by stating that he is enclosing the 'Extracts from the Tracts', together with Harington's 'paper of observations'. He continues: 'Newman directed my attention on the subject of Invocations & Paryers for the dead to Tracts 71 & 72. These he said would furnish a "MacMandate" against any supposed to in Tract 75. It is certainly but fair that those who undertake to criticize their expressions should examine the whole body of their teaching which appears to be carried on systematically and so we must read all the Tracts I suppose . . The world will not certainly and I fear not even that part of it which calls itself religious.' He gives details of two books which he has bought and ends with a comment concerning 'Hume of '. TWO: 'Wednesday. Mh. 13.' 3pp., 12mo. Presumably referring to the Bishop of Oxford, he writes that he has read Harington's 'letters to the Bishop with the attention the subject deserves. They remind me of a game of billiards where one player so places the balls that the adversary must almost inevitably pocket himself off the red and so lose the game. The Bishop however did not pocket himself but made a push for another part of the table.' The matter in question should be decided by a 'national Synod'. He agrees with the Bishop 'that practically we should lay as few obstacles as we can in the way of a returning Schismatic'. He end with reference to 'the New Poor Law' and 'the comparative comfort of the Agricultural Labourer'. From the Harington family papers.

4pp., 12mo. Good, on aged paper, with one small spot at head of first page. He feels sure that 'if Canon Creighton [Mandell Creighton, then Canon of Worcester] could be persuaded to undertake the Lectures he would do the work far better and far more worthily than I can hope to do it', but he does not know Creighton well enough to ask him to take his place. 'And so, in view of your letter, I think that I had better look forward to coming and doing my best: though I greatly fear that the work may be less thoroughly prepared than it shold be'. If he is to come he suggests an alteration to the arrangements. Somewhat disingenuously, considering the fact that his sister Catherine is married to him, he suggests as another replacement 'one Parish Priest in your own diocese' who is 'most fit to bear such a trust - Mr. H. L. Thompson, of Iron Acton'. He praises Thompson for his 'ten years continuous experience, his good ability and wide knowledge', which would 'give the very highest Value to his Lectures, if only you could persuade him to come'. He knows 'no one whose judgement & goodness seem to me more trustworthy than his'. If Thompson cannot come Paget will do his best, 'if all is well'.

See his entry in the Oxford DNB, with those of Brougham and Goldwin Smith. 3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, with thin strip from windowpane mount adhering to the blank reverse of the second leaf. Signed O Gordon and addressed to Dear Mr Da [Qeue?] . An interesting letter, full of content. He begins by thanking him for Ld Broughams letter which I have disposed of as directed . He had some difficulty in making it out , but is glad to infer from it that there will be no war just now , although he is afraid there must be a feeling of humiliation which will be permanent in France when there is a permanent foreign minister (L[ouis]. N[apoleon]. himself) that will find some unpleasant expression hereafter . He can hardly make out what Brougham says of Goldwin Smith , but he gathers that he does not agree with him, that as a matter of principle and policy we ought to get rid of all our colonies at once. / As to letting them go peacably [sic] & with mutual good will, when they are of age, that is quite another thing. .

Eight items from the papers of Stanley Thomas Cross, including six evocative pieces of Christ s Hospital ephemera. The material ranges in dimension from foolscap 8vo to 12mo. Items One to Five are printed circulars (each with the school crest) relating to the Christ s Hospital admissions process, dating from 1894 and 1895, all from R. L. Franks, Clerk . SIX: Mimeographed facsimile of autograph letter, dated 6 December 1894, with actual signature of the Christ s Hospital clerk R. L. Franks, and addressed by him to S. T. Cross s mother Mrs. [Matilda] Cross . T. Cross,] be admitted into this Hospital s Boy s School [subject to the provisions of the Scheme] . SEVEN and EIGHT: Two Autograph Letters to his mother (Mrs Matilda Cross), one signed Stanley and the other without signature. Both on bifoliums and apparently incomplete. Both from Lamb s House, Christ s Hospital, West Horsham (the unsigned letter on school letterhead). Neither dated but the unsigned letter docketed 18 May 1903. SEVEN: Undated letter to his mother, signed Stanley . Discussing the terms of a scholarship ( They would never take it away except for gross idling. ) to what is clearly Pembroke College, Oxford. 4pp, 12mo. There is a reference to Barton s letter (Alfred Thomas Barton, 1865-1912, Fellow of Pembroke), and he discusses the possible need for a testimonial, living costs at Oxford, and the reduced school scholarship (due to the extraordinary number (nine) of the successful Grecians this year . The letter concludes (breaks off?): I was kept on after the usual time for leaving, to be a Grecian, & on the understanding that I should obtain the customary exhibition; tis only within the past year that my eyes have been opened[;] my schol[arship] is in no way inferior to those of many past Grecians who have proceeded to the University on School Exhibitions . EIGHT: Unsigned undated letter to mother, docketed with date 18 May 1903. 3pp, 12mo. Begins: My Dear Mother. / Well I ve got it. Its only a £60 Schol but I mean to get on somehow. I am now free from all anxiety & at liberty to hunt around for assistance from Companies. There is a reference to another letter from old Barton [.] the Senior Tutor . He admits: I may as well tell you now that if I had failed to get in before midsummer, I should have given it up. [last clause underlined] For it would have been no use going on any longer. He gives further details of the arrangements, with reference to Upcott , asking her not to divulge how much the schol is worth , After Oxford Cross would work as a schoolmaster before serving in the Great War. He then worked in the Hague as a translator at the newly-formed League of Nations Permanent Court of International Justice. During the Second World War he worked as a censor at the BBC in London, before returned to the Hague, retiring six months before his death in 1950.
