A bound typescript on the history and legends of unicorns written by author and research librarian, Helmut Ripperger as a Christmas gift to his "favourite friend" Harriette Jansen in 1954. The full title reads as follows, "Fabulous Facts and Fancies Lore and Legend Anent The Unicorn Carefully Collected and Collated for His Favourite Friend Harriette Jansen by Her Faithful Friend Helmut Ripperger at Christmas 1954." Ripperger explores stories including unicorns from various cultures and time periods and illustrates them with images from removed from other works featuring the unicorn as part of coats of arms, in statuary, and medieval art. Helmut Ripperger had a storied career which began in the 1920s at the *Berlin Evening News*. He went on to work for Oxford University Press, University Books, and wrote several cookbooks. Additionally he translated a volume on saint's feast days by Jacobus de Voragine. A beautiful book made as a unique Christmas gift in the 1950s.
