Text in English. 70 pp. Working memory is a system with limited capacity that enables the temporary storage and manipulation of information during cognitive activities. Previous studies have produced a large quantity of data suggesting that individual differences in working memory capacity have important consequences both for the acquisition and the use of many cognitive skills important in everyday life Although considerable individual variation has been found in the causal factors leading to intellectual disability, in the severity of intellectual impairment, and in characteristic cognitive profiles, nearly all persons with intellectual disability have been found to share an impaired capacity for tasks requiring the involvement of working memory. In fact, many studies have suggested that in persons with intellectual disability, working memory capacity even lags behind general intellectual performance, i.e. mental age. Differences in working memory functioning between aetiological groups of intellectual disability have also been reported. In the present thesis, the structure and the capacity of working memory, as well as connections between working memory, intelligence. problem-solving ability, and everyday cognitive skills in adult persons with intellectual disability were investigated.
