Hardcover. Zustand: As New. Leichte Kratzer / Abnutzungen / Druckstellen. In the Roman period the world from the Atlantic Ocean to the East China Sea was tied together by ships and caravans carrying textiles, minerals, aromatics, and other valuable commodities across vast distances. In the span of three short centuries the Syrian city of Palmyra rose from unremarkable origins to assume a key role in this exchange - a position that eventually enabled her to, albeit unsuccessfully, take on the might of Rome herself. This first book-length survey of Palmyrene trade in almost four decades asks how this was possible for the people of a city that was neither on the shortest, nor on the easiest route between east and west. The study draws on the wealth of epigraphic, literary, and archaeological data handed down from the ancient city as well as the extensive scholarly tradition. This material is juxtaposed with information about the natural and geopolitical environment, ethnographic records, and network analysis, in order to explain the remarkable success of the cosmopolitan desert nomads of Palmyra.

Softcover. Zustand: Fine. Leichte Kratzer / Abnutzungen / Druckstellen; Gebrochener Buchrucken / Seiten oder Softcover umgeknickt. This volume explores the archaeology and history of the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra, featuring contributions from a conference held in Athens in December 2012, part of the Syrian-Norwegian research project on the city and its trade dynamics. It encapsulates international research and fieldwork conducted prior to the Syrian civil war. The collection includes an introduction and a variety of papers addressing topics such as the interaction between pastoral nomads and city-state kings in the semi-arid landscape, the significance of Palmyra in trade, and its connections to the Chinese Silk Trade. It also examines the Palmyrene Temple in Rome, the historical trade routes from Palmyra to Damascus, and the role of colonnaded streets in communication within the Eastern Roman Empire. Geophysical prospection methods applied to Palmyra, the cultural influences reflected in pottery, and insights from excavations of tombs and residential structures are also discussed. Additionally, studies on human skeletal remains and agricultural practices in Byzantine Palmyra provide a comprehensive view of the city's historical significance and its inhabitants' lifestyles. This volume serves as a vital resource for understanding Palmyra's role in ancient trade and cultural exchange.

In 2001 a project entitled Trade, migration and cultural change in the Indian Ocean was launched at the Department of History, University of Bergen, with funding from the Norwegian Research Council. The project was planned to be the first joint projectin a program called “The Indian Ocean History Program” From the beginning, the project invited interested researchers in other discAlines at the university (mainly in archaeology, anthropology and classics) to take part in our research seminar series in 2001-2002 in which work in progress and completed papers were presented. In addition, the project sought to establish more permanent research links with foreign researchers and research institutions concerned with the Indian Ocean. In order to promote international cooperation in the field of Indian Ocean research, three workshops were organised in Bergen, 2001, 2002, 2004, in which papers on a broad range of topics were presented and discussed. What binds the individual projects together is the focus on the movement of commodities, people, cultural features and ideas, and the durable networks and links that these created and the local impact around the Indian Ocean. The areas most focused on have been East Africa centred on Zanzibar, the Red Sea Region, the Persian Gulf and Southern Arabia, and finally on western and southern India. This volume shows parts of the research that has been undertaken by project members and associates. Most of the articles in this anthology were presented at the 2004 workshop. They focus on the Indian Ocean in the ancient period.

His contributions as scholar, teacher, supervisor and informal advisor to Norwegian studies in Egyptology, classics, archaeology, history, religion, and linguistics through more than five decades can hardly be overstated.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book presents a novel perspective on long-distance trade in the ancient world that integrates network theory and environmental analysis into our understandings of production, movement and exchange in the so-called Long Classical Millennium (c.300 BCE 900 BCE).This approach departs from traditional Eurocentric perspectives that have tended to focus primarily on empires and imperial agency as the dominant analytical category, arguing instead that environmental factors played a much greater role in influencing the formation of trade routes during this period. Written in an accessible style, chapters seek to integrate and synthesise recent developments from global history, network studies, economic history and critical geography, offering new ways for scholars to examine the growth of this proto-globalised economic system. By examining the networks of people, places, animals, and things that came together in order to connect ancient Africa and Eurasia, the author de-centers any one group or region to instead foreground the environmental dynamics of ancient trade. This book will be a fascinating resource for scholars and students of ancient and global history, as well as ancient economic and environmental historians, archaeologists, and more.
