Largely known in the United States for work which involved driving a motorcycle in the desert to create massive, mysterious patterns, this publication is the first full-scale presentation of his ideas. Heizer's huge sculptures and semi-geometrical patterns in the desert are a bold act of large-scale markmarking, while also suggesting the more troublesome aspects of man's use of nature." ; FINE/FINE. Zustand: Good. Original portfolio for the suite with the table of contents on thick board. 63 x 56cm.Likely for a display by Gagosian. Few dents.Michael Heizer created a group of 4 intaglio prints for Durham Press titled "Hard Edge Etchings." The portfolio consists of four prints, each measuring 22 x 19 ¼ inches. The Hard Edge Etchings were made from custom-cut, shaped copper plates with unique silhouettes, relating to his works on nonstandard canvases: Hard Edge Paintings and his recent Wet Paintings, all of which were shown recently in a solo show at Gagosian, Beverly Hills. Unlike his Hard Edge Paintings-which recall Color Field abstraction with their art historical title and their bold, distinct areas of colors or tone-the prints contain spontaneous yet precise etched lines and shapes that often intersect and overlap. Their active, energetic surfaces harken to the early modernist works of artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich while being decidedly contemporary. In his monumental excavations and constructions, geometric paintings, and drawings, Michael Heizer explores the relationship between positive and negative space. Examining the profound effects of form and scale, his works evoke the simultaneous feelings of awe and dread that constitute the sublime.
