Original Playbill Magazine for the week of Monday, June 13, 1949 for the Broadway performance of "Mr. Roberts" at the Alvin Theater in New York. The play, which debuted in 1948, was based on the novel of the same name by Thomas Heggen. Henry Fonda originated the role of the title character, having been released for a movie contract in order to accept the part, and won the Tony Award as Best Actor. He reprised his role for 1955 film version. The play itself won the Best Play" Tony for 1948.

The play starred Henry Fonda, who repeated the role in the 1955 film version, which was co-directed by John Ford and Mervyn LeRoy (officially), with Joshua Logan brought in late in the production to re-shoot selected scenes (uncredited). Heggen himself was overwhelmed by the play's success, suffered a crippling bout of writer's block, and tragically died (either accidentally or by suicide) just a little over a year into the play's original run.
