The women in this novel are in business for a profit, and by this point it seems that money is the only consideration. This novel following a group of prostitutes offers a cleverly constructed plot, subtle characterisation, and a brilliantly conceived background with a good measure of humour. Written by Adam de Hegedus, a Hungarian author who came to England in 1927 and adopted the pseudonym Rodney Garland. In the original red cloth binding. Externally, excellent. The author's final novel, notable for announcing not only the author's death 'at a tragically early age' (in 1955), but also his identity as the author of two novels, 'The Heart in Exile' and 'The Troubled Midnight' (both notable for their foregrounding of gay characters), published under the name 'Rodney Garland'. It also carries the praise of André Gide for his work. Adam de Hegedus was a Hungarian émigré resident in Britain since the 1930s; the present work is compared by the publisher to Evelyn Waugh - 'set against the amusingly erratic background of High Hungarian circles in London [.] a world of diplomats, journalists, principal private secretaries, political hostesses and the like'. …

A scarce book, by an author, a Hungarian expatriate who settled in London after a short time in Paris and later published pioneering works of gay fiction under the pseudonym 'Rodney Garland'. Its printed dedication, in homage, is to James Burnham - in relation to whose work, 'The Managerial Revolution' (a 'brilliant and awe-inspiring vista into a possible world'), the author situates his thesis with regard to its central problem of 'nationalism'. In the aftermath of the Second World War, the book is a plea for tolerance in pursuit of lasting peace. Hegedus's analysis was published in the same year as George Orwell's pamphlet, 'James Burnham and the Managerial Revolution' - and the American philosopher's theories continued to preoccupy him in the writing of 'Nineteen Eighty-Four'.…

An early attempt to depict the Cambridge spies in fiction, notable - as was the author's first book under the Garland pseudonym, 'The Heart in Exile' - for its foregrounding of gay characters. Here, the background of the group of friends is transposed to Oxford, where the narrator, novelist James Edmonton had known Eric Fontanet (based on Guy Burgess) and Alan Lockheed (based on Donald Maclean), whose 'sudden mysterious disappearance' (blurb) provides the plot. Unlike 'The Heart in Exile', which drew a much more detailed portrait of the gay 'underground' ('it opens a window on our time', blurb), here the narrator is straight - professing that 'men had never interested me, but inversion in itself always had'. Adam de Hegedus, a Hungarian émigré resident in Britain since the 1930s, died the year after this novel was published - an apparent suicide. A further novel under his own name, using which he had earlier published a novel as well as volumes of memoir and reportage, appeared in 1956. Two later books by Rodney Garland, with this publisher, are now known to be the work of his fellow Hungarian, Peter de Polnay.…
