This seven year period begins just one year after my arrival in New York City. I mention this because I believe this environmental change from California to be significant in spurring a deeper investigation of my sources and beginnings. Looking back I see one of the most important periods in the development of my artistic vision to have occured about twelve years ago, when I was a student in California. I was them living in a small unattractive room, containing a bed, table and a chair (my cell). This room was in a cheap student housing project filled with perverts, post-hippie junkies and poor students, I being the later, of course. These close grim surroundings drove me indoors into the process of drawing. The images in these small drawings have remained in my works ever since. Such images as : planes, trains, rockets, elephants and cows. Another force at work on me in that small room was the recent death of my father and the isolation that it brought. This loss coupled with my low-life environment brought together my first brush with the myth of the romantic artist (survival). Romance does play a part in my work especially with these very early personal drawings. The early drawings from 1970 have an adolescent quality, using sexual fantasy as their themes and exploring it through the use of animals such as : elephants and cows. The erotic edge in these drawings started to create a type of confrontation and humor that has carried through the works since that time. Several years later (1971-1973) while I was a graduate student in Sacramento I started working on a series of large paper collage paintings. These material orientated paintings were dealing again with confrontation in their size and later in their color and configuration. Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
