In den Warenkorbhardcover. Zustand: Good. First Edition. Publication: London, Methuen & Co. Ltd., 1919 Formatting: 8vo, pp. xi, 128. Condition Report Good. The book is presented in its original light blue publisherâs cloth, which remains structurally sound but displays age-appropriate wear. The spine has significantly darkened, exhibiting moder…ate rubbing along the joints alongside characteristic crushing and minor fraying at the head and tail. The board corners are softly bumped with slight surface wear to the cloth extremities, while the rear board shows a small, isolated dark smudge. Internally, the binding remains resilient and square. The text block edges show typical age-toning and mild scattered foxing that occasionally creeps into the page margins, most notably near the bottom edge. Despite these external signs of its century-old vintage, the pages are otherwise bright and clean, free of major blemishes, making this a respectable and sturdy survivor of an increasingly scarce early aviation volume. Catalogue Note This is a true first edition, complete with the fourteen photographic illustrations and six diagrams called for, and features a preface by Major-General J. E. B. Seely, the Under-Secretary of State for Air. The front free endpaper bears a neat, contemporary previous ownership signature dated 1924, adding a modest touch of early provenance without detracting from the book's overall presentation. While first printings of this post-World War I aviation classic appear on the market with moderate frequency, they are almost universally devoid of their fragile original dust jackets. In its original cloth, it represents a highly desirable cornerstone piece for collectors of early flight and exploration history. In Our Atlantic Attempt, pioneering aviators Harry Hawker and Kenneth Mackenzie Grieve offer a thrilling, firsthand account of their heroic 1919 bid to conquer the Atlantic Ocean by air. Competing for the historic £10,000 Daily Mail prize, the duo set off from Newfoundland in a single-engine Sopwith biplane, braving treacherous weather, rudimentary navigational challenges, and immense physical strain. Though a blocked radiator ultimately forced them to ditch their aircraft in the storm-tossed ocean after fourteen hours of flight, their miraculous rescue by a passing Danish freighter turned their "failure" into a global sensation. This gripping narrative is a testament to the extraordinary courage, technical ingenuity, and indomitable spirit of the early pioneers of flight. N/A (illustrator).
