In den WarenkorbZustand: Very Good+. various photographers (illustrator). First edition, 1st Printing. First softcover edition with full number line 10987654321. Lots of pictures of The Champ fighting in the ring and at the piano as well as in Zaire Africa. Chronology of fights, Index, 175 pp. "Drawing on dozens of recently conducted interviews and hundreds of hours spent with Ali, author Thomas Hauser, who is recognized the world over for his earlier works on Ali, reveals the man behind the blazing lights; a hero who continues to command reverential respect long after his glory days in boxing. There was a time when Muhammad Ali was the greatest fighter in the world. He's not anymore, because like the rest of us, he has gotten older. But Muhammad Ali is now the most loved person in the world. He can go anywhere -- to a shopping mall in the United States, a restaurant in Europe, a marketplace in Africa, a village in Asia -- and virtually every man, woman and child he sees will know and embrace him. That's an incredible status for anyone to hold. Muhammad Ali: In Perspective is a compelling portrait of a unique man: a superstar athlete who has become more important than his sport; a cultural icon who is a genuine role model. Ali has earned the right to the title he once proclaimed for himself -- "The Greatest." Publisher softcover sharp bright unmarked.

([16.5cm x 23.5cm] approx. 513 pp and notes. Black boards with gilt titles to the spine. Glossy black and white photographs in the text. To many sports fans the greatest ever boxer dominating the heavyweight championship for 20 years but Ali was more than just a boxer. He vehemently objected to the US involvement in Vietnam and was the strongest voice in support of Black rights. His continued desire to regain the heavyweight championship also said something about his self belief and enjoyment of fame. These ingredients make for a fascinating portrayal of undoubtedly one of the most important figures of the twentieth century. Signed by Author(s).

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, presentation copy, inscribed by Houser, "To Gerald Ford, with admiration and respect, Thomas Hauser", and signed by Ali on a label pasted onto the front free endpaper. Ali was a controversial figure for American politicians. He was a member of the Nation of Islam and had refused to join the army during the Vietnam War, for which he was stripped of his heavyweight title in 1967. He did not fight for nearly four years, but in 1974 he returned to the ring to dethrone George Foreman and reclaim his title as heavyweight champion of the world. Shortly after, President Ford invited Ali to the White House. "I wanted to meet Muhammad", said Ford, "not only because of my interest in sports, but because it was part of my overall effort to heal the wounds of racial division, Vietnam, and Watergate" (Hauser). Thomas Hauser, "When Muhammad Ali and Gerald Ford Met", The Sweet Science, 19 July 2019. Small square octavo. Original black cloth, gilt on front cover. With dust jacket. A fine copy.
