Jahrhunderts, Gottscheds Sterbender Cato, Lessings Emilia Galotti und Schillers Die Räuber wird die Entwicklung des dramatischen Dialogs im 18. Jahrhundert unter pragmalinguistischen Aspekten beleuchtet. Dazu wird eine musterorientierte Methode der Dialoganalyse gewählt. Zugleich soll damit die Tauglichkeit einer solchen Analyse als Voraussetzung für die Dramenanalyse überprüft werden. Die Analyse bewegt sich auf drei Ebenen: dem internen Kommunikationssystem, dem externen Kommunikationssystem und dem übergeordneten Kommunikationssystem. Diesen drei Dialogsystemen sind unterschiedliche Funktionen zugeordnet. Während im internen Kommunikationssystem der Dialog als Gespräch der Figuren analysiert wird, werden im externen Kommunikationssystem die dramaturgischen und stilistischen Funktionen des Dialogs betrachtet. Im übergeordneten Dialogsystem schließlich wird aus der Dialoggestaltung ein Dialogmodell abgeleitet, das als zeitgenössisches Modell gesellschaftlicher Verständigung zu interpretieren ist.
