Handsome letterhead for items 'Bought of Lupton Relfe | (From J. Hatchard's Son's [sic]) | Bookseller, Publisher & Stationer. | No. 13, Cornhill | Merchants, Captains, Book Societies & Schools supplied on liberal Termes | Periodical Publications, books neatly & elegantly bound.' Itemised bill for 'Mr Clarke', containing six items totalling £2 13s 6d, and including 'Simsons Euclid 12mo', 'Popes Odyssey 2 Vols' and 'East India Register'. TWO: Receipt, reading: 'Received Sepr 13. 1825 of Mr Clarke Two Pounds 13/6 for Books as Pr Bill | Lupton Relfe | 13 Cornhill'. There is no entry for Relfe in BBTI. The British Museum Department of Prints and Drawings has him commissioning three prints at his Cornhill address between 1822 and 1828, and notes a possible connection with the firm of Relfe & Fletcher.

All with a bookplate affixed to the front endpaper. Bound by Hatchards of Piccadilly, London. A fine set. Justin McCarthy (1830-1912) was a Victorian writer and politician whose literary output included historical novels, biographies, and a comprehensive history of his own times. His novels often intertwined with his political interests, reflecting his advocacy for Irish rights and self-governance, and they were popular for their accessible style and engaging narratives. Among his notable works are A History of Our Own Times, which chronicles the events of Victorian Britain, and The Dictator, a political novel that explores issues of power and governance. McCarthy also wrote several biographies, including those of prominent figures such as Sir Robert Peel and Pope Leo XIII.

Stamped 'Hatchards, 187, Piccadilly' and address in very small type at the inside of the first flyleaf. Top edge gilt. viii, 96 p. With a portrait of the author. Later edition. Spine area a bit discolored, some wear. The somewhat eccentric poet, also known as Violet Nicholson, committed suicide in 1904 (39 years old) after the death of her husband. (This book was first published in 1905). They lived an adventurous life in British India from 1881. Nice deluxe binding with asymmetrical art nouveau lettering.
