Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Stephen Greenblatt, the charismatic Harvard professor who "knows more about Shakespeare than Ben Jonson or the Dark Lady did" (John Leonard, Harper's), has written a biography that enables us to see, hear, and feel how an acutely sensitive and talented boy, surrounded by the rich tapestry of Elizab…ethan life; full of drama and pageantry, and also cruelty and danger; could have become the world's greatest playwright. A young man from the provincesa man without wealth, connections, or university educationmoves to London. In a remarkably short time he becomes the greatest playwright not just of his age but of all time. His works appeal to urban sophisticates and first-time theatergoers; he turns politics into poetry; he recklessly mingles vulgar clowning and philosophical subtlety. How is such an achievement to be explained? Will in the World interweaves a searching account of Elizabethan England with a vivid narrative of the playwright's life. We see Shakespeare learning his craft, starting a family, and forging a career for himself in the wildly competitive London theater world, while at the same time grappling with dangerous religious and political forces that took less-agile figures to the scaffold. Above all, we never lose sight of the great worksA Midsummer Night's Dream, Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, and morethat continue after four hundred years to delight and haunt audiences everywhere. The basic biographical facts of Shakespeare's life have been known for over a century, but now Stephen Greenblatt shows how this particular life history gave rise to the world's greatest writer. Bringing together little-known historical facts and little-noticed elements of Shakespeare's plays, Greenblatt makes inspired connections between the life and the works and deliver "a dazzling and subtle biography" (Richard Lacayo, Time). Readers will experience Shakespeare's vital plays again as if for the first time, but with greater understanding and appreciation of their extraordinary depth and humanity. Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. World-renowned Shakespeare scholar Stephen Greenblatt explores the playwrights insight into bad (and often mad) rulers. Examining the psycheand psychosesof the likes of Richard III, Macbeth, Lear and Coriolanus, Greenblatt illuminates the ways in which William Shakespeare delved into the lust for a…bsolute power and the disasters visited upon the societies over which these characters rule. Tyrant shows that Shakespeares work remains vitally relevant today, not least in its probing of the unquenchable, narcissistic appetites of demagogues and the self-destructive willingness of collaborators who indulge them. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. One of the world's most celebrated scholars, Stephen Greenblatt has crafted both an innovative work of history and a thrilling story of discovery, in which one manuscript, plucked from a thousand years of neglect, changed the course of human thought and made possible the world as we know it. Nearly… six hundred years ago, a short, genial, cannily alert man in his late thirties took a very old manuscript off a library shelf, saw with excitement what he had discovered, and ordered that it be copied. That book was the last surviving manuscript of an ancient Roman philosophical epic, On the Nature of Things, by Lucretiusa beautiful poem of the most dangerous ideas: that the universe functioned without the aid of gods, that religious fear was damaging to human life, and that matter was made up of very small particles in eternal motion, colliding and swerving in new directions. The copying and translation of this ancient book-the greatest discovery of the greatest book-hunter of his age-fueled the Renaissance, inspiring artists such as Botticelli and thinkers such as Giordano Bruno; shaped the thought of Galileo and Freud, Darwin and Einstein; and had a revolutionary influence on writers such as Montaigne and Shakespeare and even Thomas Jefferson. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Oblong 4to (22.5 × 26 cm), 55, [3] pp., including a complete facsimile of the 20-leaf manuscript. Publisher's cloth, spine lettered in gilt (binding slightly rubbed). First edition. With a Postscript by Philip Hofer. Published for the Department of Printing and Graphic Arts, Houghton Library, Harva…rd University, and The Newberry Library (Publications of the Department of Printing and Graphic Arts, Houghton Library, Harvard University, Series V). The only published facsimile of the autograph copybook by Bernardino Cataneo, one of the foremost masters of the Italian Renaissance chancery hand, reproduced at actual size from the original vellum manuscript formerly in the collection of Myron A. Hofer and previously owned by Philip Hofer, founding Curator of Printing and Graphic Arts at Harvard University. Cataneo completed the manuscript at Siena on 4 February 1545, where he served as maestro di scrivere to the university, dedicating it to "Signor Odoardo Ralyg Gentilhuomo Inglese," almost certainly Edward Raleigh. As an autograph writing book rather than a printed manual, it preserves Cataneo's hand with a fidelity unattainable in contemporary woodcut copybooks and ranks among the finest surviving examples of sixteenth-century Italian calligraphy. The manuscript presents the principal scripts cultivated by Cataneo's generation, including the cancellaresca corsiva and cancellaresca formata, together with examples of the tonda antica and capitalis monumentalis. Stephen Harvard's substantial introduction is arranged in seven chapters treating Cataneo and his manuscript; the cancellaresca corsiva; the cancellaresca formata; the subsidiary scripts; Cataneo's influence in England, including the development of the "sweet Roman hand" at the Tudor court; Cataneo's relationship to the printed writing manuals of Arrighi, Tagliente, Palatino, and Cresci; and the manuscript's place within the broader tradition of Renaissance calligraphy. Throughout, Harvard emphasizes the unique evidential value of an autograph exemplar, allowing direct comparison between the living penmanship of a master scribe and the engraved models upon which the history of Renaissance calligraphy has largely depended. Philip Hofer's postscript reconstructs the manuscript's provenance before its acquisition by Myron A. Hofer and its publication in facsimile. An indispensable reference for the study of Italian Renaissance handwriting, chancery script, and the history of Western calligraphy. Cataneo, Bernardino (illustrator).
